Cyclone damaged schools in Santo to be rebuilt

The New Zealand Government has donated VT315 million to reconstruct buildings and improve student learning at three schools in Santo damaged by Cyclone Harold.

The Category 5 cyclone caused widespread destruction in the Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga and in northern Vanuatu in April 2020 and many schools were damaged.

Santo’s Sarakata School, Santo East School and Fanafo Primary School will be rebuilt.

The schools had their roofs blown off during the cyclone and since then the students have been studying under tarpaulins.

The New Zealand High Commissioner, Jonathan Schwass, says the student learning funds will help students and teachers gain confidence in science through an e-learning project.

The Minister of Education and Training, Samson Samsen, signed the agreement to start the reconstruction of the three schools.
