Kava was a main cash crop on the island of Tongoa prior to cyclone Pam.

The island has had to rebuild this industry, while finding diffuculties as the cyclone damaged the kava roots and plants.

Since then the islanders had to find alternatives, and they had decided to invest in food crops.

A farmer from the island who travelled to Vila to sell his produce told VBTC News that this investment has paid off, and they have reported good income generated as a result.
