An epidemiologist from the Pacific Community says dengue fever outbreaks are currently active in American Samoa as well as Wallis and Futuna.
An eight-year-old girl from Wallis and Futuna died after her condition deteriorated and she had been flown to New Caledonia's medical centre.

The SPC's Dr Salanieta Saketa said all Pacific countries were vulnerable to dengue especially as the wet season approaches and mosquitoes carrying the virus breed in collected water.

Dr Saketa said as of yesterday there were 1933 suspected cases over the past year in American Samoa and 461 suspected cases over the year in Wallis and Futuna.

"So we have two countries that are still having circulation of dengue fever. And that is one of them is Wallis and Futuna which has a circulation of dengue serotype 1.
And American Samoa with dengue serotype 2. So basically those are the two countries with active circulation of dengue."
